Ningen Shotaisho are among the highest commanders of the Nippon armies only surpassed in authority by the Oni daymios or the tengu lords. These humans have been personally entrusted by one of the Oni clans with the command of an army, an honor and privilege that yokai lords only grant to the most talented and loyal among their mortal servants.
All who reached this rank began as humble ashigarus who rosed to their current position through merits on the battlefield ensuring there is no ineptitude among these commanders, who are veterans of dozens of battles capable of leading their forces against the enemy with same ease as a swordsman brandishes his weapon.
Ningen shotaisho differ greatly in skill and aptitude, some are fierce frontline combatants whose skill with weapons is unparalleled while others are master strategists who prefer to lead from the back lines. In any case, no one questions the leadership skills or the commitment to the cause of these commanders who will give everything to meet the expectations of their lords since those who stand out extremely well and draw the attention of the Oni emperor will be one step away from being promoted to demonhood, becoming onis and obtaining immortality, a transformation that has little to envy of that of the demon princes of the dark gods.
