Tercios are typical Estalian formations consisting of ranks of armored soldiers armed with glaives and projectile weapons such as crossbows and arquebuses that form an impenetrable wall of long, razor-sharp steel blades that rain down lead and bolts at their enemies as they approach. Although the first tercios were lightly armored pikemen and arquebusier formations during the time of the Lustrian expeditions this formation didn’t prove to be effective as spears and pikes were not able to pierce the tough scaly hides and thick plates of the beasts of the land. On top of that the humidity of the jungle environment was apt to spoil gunpowder and render arquebuses infective, not to mention the massive casualties suffered by the lightly armored soldiers at the hands of the skinks poisoned darts. This caused the few survivors of the Tercios formations to reinvent themselves on the fly by swapping their weaponry for heavy glaives and halberds and taking the armor of dead stalian Knights. With this new equipment the Tercios made their way through the jungles and temple cities with blood and steel looting treasures, facing the terrible beasts and enduring rains of darts hardening their hearts and turning them into grim veterans and elite troops. When they returned to Estalia they proved to be far above their hombres villanos brothers and became one of the most desired mercenary troops by any commander, raising their fame to such an extent that the old tercio formations were discarded in favor of the new way of doing things, the way of these veterans of Lustria.
